EMT Entrance Assessment (EMTEA) -
FISDAP & Reading Comprehension
NOTE: THIS IS MANDATORY ASSESSMENT FOR ANYONE APPLYING FOR ADMISSION TO ANY OF CROZER'S EMT PROGRAMS.
Description:
The EMT Entrance Assessment (EMTEA) is for individuals who want to apply for admission into any EMT courses offered by Crozer Health EMSTI.
The EMTEA helps to ensure that EMT students are set up for successful learning, studying, and testing before they commit to spending time in and paying tuition for EMT class. It also gives a "sneak peak" into some of the things that students will learn about during EMT class.
The EMTEA at Crozer has two sections:
- 1.) FISDAP: a standardized multiple-choice test provided by EMS institutions all over the county for entry into EMT programs
- 2.) READING COMPREHENSION TEST: developed by Crozer EMSTI; focuses solely on reading comprehension and will consist of several brief paragraphs followed by multiple choice questions about the paragraphs. Answer to these questions are found directly on the pages in front of you!
Historically, we have found the students who succeed the most in this course have taken part in this assessment to ensure their readiness for a challenging EMT course and a career in EMS. We truly care about our students and want to see them ALL succeed and become EMTs!
Frequently asked questions:
- How does scoring work?
A combined score of 75% or above on the EMTEA is considered "passing" and will qualify you for admission into any EMT class offered by Crozer Health EMSTI.
We weight the FISDAP section of the EMTEA as 30% of the overall EMTEA score. We weight the Reading Comprehension section of the EMTEA as 70% of the overall EMTEA score.
- Is there a cost to take the EMTEA?
It costs $25.00 to take the EMTEA. Should you pass the EMTEA and enroll in one of our EMT courses, this amount will be credited to your tution. We have found the the only way to prevent "no shows" to the EMTEA, is to put a price on the exam. But you do get it back upon enrolling in an EMT class!
- Is the EMTEA a timed assessment/exam?
The EMTEA is NOT timed. We block off 2 hours for the EMTEA to ensure computer access and for scheduling purposes only. The average completion time is about 1.5 hours but we have had students finish in as little as 30 minutes and others finish in 3 hours - each student is different. Don't stress! - Come in, take your time, and do the best that you can :)
- Where do I take the EMTEA?
The EMTEA needs to be taken in-person at Crozer Hospital as this is a proctored assessment.
The hospital address is:
One Medical Center Blvd
Upland, PA 19018
Please park in Parking Garage #2. Note the garage will have you take a ticket upon entering, but it is currently FREE to park since you are considered a "visitor" to the hospital.
Crozer is also accessible by public transit: SEPTA bus lines 109, 113, 117 and SEPTA train line Wilmington/Newark.
Once inside the hospital, you will head to the Crozer Simulation Center located on the 1st floor of the East Wing.
- Is there a way that I can take the EMTEA in a virtual format/online?
If absolutely needed, we can arrange for you to take the EMTEA online. It will still be proctored. To take the EMTEA in an online format, you will need access to a computer with a webcam and a quiet area where there will be no interuptions. If you would like to request to take the EMTEA in a virtual/online format, please email Stacey Wigent at stacey.wigent@crozer.org to discuss and to schedule.
- I want to take the EMTEA! What happens after I register?
Once you register for the EMT Entrance Assessment (EMTEA), you will receive a confirmation email to the email address that you listed during registration. Within this confirmation email will be directions to get you to the Simulation Center/EMS Training Institute (EMSTI) at Crozer Hospital - this is where you will take the EMTEA.

If you have any questions regarding the EMTEA, need to reschedule or need to request an EMTEA session not listed, please contact EMSTI Director, Stacey Wigent at (610) 447-2737 or via email at stacey.wigent@crozer.org.
- What happens if I don't pass the EMTEA?
That's ok! Keep your head up and try again. We ask that you wait 30 days before scheduling another attempt at the EMTEA. Email stacey.wigent@crozer.org for study tips/suggestions. We want you in one of our EMT programs, so we are happy to help you try improve your score!
